Blocking up a doorway?
I want to block up a external glass door. I’ve blocked up the inside with plasterboard and decorated over it so that is fine. Now I need to do the outside. It needs to be rendered to match the rest of the house, can I just put external ply and render over it or do I need to fill it with blocks?
Ok, this may sound odd, but have you removed the door and frame?
I ask this because, if you have plaster boarded it, what did you fix the plasterboard to?
If the door and frame are still in place, I would guess that this is maybe a temporary measure and you one day expect to re-use the doorway. In which case, I would go with the external ply option with ex-met mesh, (specially used for rendering, don’t use weldmesh whatever you do, it will rust!), fixed to the ply with suitable galvenised fixings. If the fixings are not galvenised or at least corrosion resistant then they will rust and you will be left with orange patches in the render, or even worse, the actual render coming away from the rusty fixings.
Now, if the door and frame have been removed, the correct way to block the opening would be to use blocks tied to the existing reveal, (a mix of 5 parts sand to 1 part cement would normally be suitable, with a couple of egg cups of febmix. layed on a damp proof course to stop the damp rising from the floor below,(very important). Install 2 Wall ties on every course of blocks tieing the two walls together, (about 200mm from each reveal).
Fit insulation into the cavity as you build the two walls, cavities do vary, so you will need to get the correct size for your particular wall.
Once the blockwork has gone off, you can then render the outside knowing it will be watertight and secure.
The inside could then be rendered and skimmed or if you prefer, you can stick plasterboard to the blocks with drywall adhesive, and then skim the wall as you would any other plasterboard.
